Here’s a painfully simple characterization: files are an operating system construct. They exist on storage, and persist when the power is out, but when they are used they are incredibly rich as a way of representing data, to the point that they are very frequently used as a way of communicating across threads, processes, and applications. Application APIs for files are built to support the idea that I can update a record in a database in place, or append data to a log, and that you can concurrently access that file and see my change almost instantaneously, to an arbitrary sub-region of the file. There’s a rich set of OS functionality, like mmap() that doubles down on files as shared persistent data that can mutate at a very fine granularity and as if it is a set of in-memory data structures.
